kino der kunst

What can art gain from cinema?
And how can cinema contribute to art?

From April 22 to 26, 2015 Munich will host the second edition of KINO DER KUNST, a unique event of its kind worldwide to present films by visual artists who take cinema beyond its traditional boundaries and explore new narrative fictitious forms. KINO DER KUNST is designed to be an exhibition and a film festival in one, creating a showcase for today’s trends in art and an international meeting point for artists, curators and the public. In 2015, it focuses on the subject 'Science & Fiction' and explores the latest techniques of narration in films by visual artists, thereby demonstrating how much technological inventions and concepts of contemporary art dominate the commercial media industry.

The program includes current short and long artists´ films from all over the world in the highly endowed International Competition. It will be accompanied by a large-scale exhibition in the Pinakothek der Moderne and the Museum Brandhorst entitled "Creating Realities", which explores artistic forms of creative narrative. In addition, there will also be presentations in the Goetz Collection, the Haus der Kunst, the Münchner Kunstverein and Lothringer13 Halle, artists' talks, lectures and an endowed young talent competition for future projects. Other highlights will include the German premiere of the last installation by the late Harun Farocki (1944-2014), "Parallel I-IV", and "Be the first of your friends“, a monographic exhibition of 36-year-old media pioneer Cory Arcangel, the winner of this year's Award for the Filmic Œvre. The festival is complemented by the exhibition "Archeology of the Future", which features video games ranging from Bill Viola to Playdead Studios and the Chinese Room as well as gallery exhibitions of works running the gamut from such artists as American veteran Larry Clark to young Moscow artists.

A jury of famous artists and curators – including Hans Ulrich Obrist from London, Yang Fudong from Shanghai and Munich collector Ingvild Goetz – will award two main prizes KINO DER KUNST in the International Competition totalling €20,000, one of them goes to an artist up to the age of 35. In addition there will be a public pitch for the KINO DER KUNST Project Award (€10,000 Euro) aimed at alumni of art and film academies throughout Europe up to the age of 35, an Award for the Filmic Œevre, also with a value of €10,000 and an Audience Award with a prize money of €5,000.
